Story-Based Professional Development for Teachers, Administrators, Counselors, and Youth Workers
Youth Communication offers dynamic professional development sessions designed to help teachers create meaningful relationships with their students, and laying the groundwork for effective learning and school communities where students feel a sense of belonging. Like our youth-facing SEL programs, YC’s Adult SEL professional development is story-based and aligned to Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework.
YC now offers CTLE hours to New York State educators for all our professional development sessions.

Through reading and discussing true, teen-written stories, youth-facing adults gain a deeper understanding of what challenges teens are facing and how they can best support them. This increase in social awareness also increases empathy for students and their families. The story reads and their paired activities reinforce the self-management, social awareness, and relationship skills lessons of the stories and ask teachers to examine themselves, building their self-awareness. Every session also asks participants about practice—what are they doing now that’s working, what they are doing now they want to stop, and what new strategies they want to try—encouraging and modeling the kind of responsible decision-making that results in better relationships and an increased sense of belonging.
Engage Educators with Insightful Sessions
Over 90% of educators who participated in our workshops found the sessions highly engaging, while 86% reported gaining deeper insights into their teaching and learning through story discussions.
The lessons provided in the YC program were well-organized and thought-provoking. I appreciated listening to and reading about my students view on how to address the circumstances of the stories we read and for how they were not judgmental of the authors or each other while engaging in student-led discourse.
