The Brian Lehrer Show features Represent magazine
1
Represent magazine editor Virginia Vitzthum and Represent contributors Pauline Gordon and Demetria Mack spoke with WNYC radio host Brian Lehrer about the power of writing for the magazine. They talked about how the teen-written stories help youth in foster care feel more empowered to deal with their challenges.
Pauline wrote for Represent between 2004 and 2006, and was one of the magazine’s most prolific writers. She described how Represent stories inform foster parents, policymakers, and child welfare staff about foster youth’s experiences and concerns. Pauline has since earned her MSW and works for a child protection agency, where she is part of a team that is implementing Youth Communication’s story-based curricula with youth in the juvenile justice system.
Demetria is both a current Represent writer and a winner in this year’s Awards for Youth in Foster Care (see below). Demetria talked about how her 6-year-old brother motivates her to write her stories in Represent. She wants him to know that he’s not alone, and that the circumstances of his childhood do not define his future. Demetria will begin her freshman year at Howard University this fall.
