Edwidge Danticat
Edwidge, ’86, is an acclaimed writer of novels, nonfiction, and books for young adults. Her second book, Krik? Krak!, was a finalist for a National Book Award, as was her investigation into the death of her uncle in Miami’s immigration jail, Brother, I’m Dying. Her first book, Breath, Eyes, Memory, was an Oprah’s Book Club selection. In an interview in Essence, Edwidge said, “At 14 I was asked by a New York City-based newspaper, New Youth Connections, to write about my experience as a new immigrant…my public writing career began.” She also credits one of her Youth Communication stories as being the nucleus for her first book. She is a graduate of Barnard College and holds an MFA from Brown University. Edwidge wrote the forewords to two Youth Communication anthologies, Starting With I, and Haiti on My Mind

Angelina Darrisaw
Angelina, ’05, is a business analyst at Disney and ESPN Media Networks. She has a BA in political science and international relations from Davidson College and a master’s degree in management from Wake Forest University.

Latrice Davis
Latrice, ’94, has a degree in journalism and communications from New York University. She has been an intern at Lifetime Media, PR Newswire, The Courier Journal in Louisville, KY, and at the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund. She worked on the editorial staff of Homework Central, in multimedia services at the Associated Press, and has worked as a freelance writer for Women’s e-News and other publications.

Damian, ’96, is an engineer at a solar power company. He has a degree in electrical engineering from the New York Institute of Technology.

Matthew Dedewo
Matthew, ’98, has a bachelor’s degree from New York City Technical College and a master’s degree in finance and media management from the Metropolitan College of New York. He has worked as an account executive for Wells Fargo and as a mortgage loan officer for Saxon Mortgage Bank. He also served in the U.S. Navy.

Lisa Denerstein
Lisa, ’88, was a New York City Teaching Fellow and is a high school teacher in the city. She has also worked at various film, broadcast, and print media jobs, and as a quilter. She received a BS degree in broadcast communications from Long Island University C.W. Post Campus and a master’s degree in English education from The City College of New York.

Adrienne, ’86, graduated from Hunter College with a BA in English and is currently studying for a master’s in linguistics at New York University. She has taught bilingual special education, English as a second language, and family literacy for the New York City Department of Education.

Arlene, ’90, is a program manager for the New York City Department of Education. She is a graduate of Brooklyn College in journalism and Puerto Rican studies, and has a master’s degree from the Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service at New York University.

Shawn Dove
Shawn, ’80, wrote for the very first Youth Communication publication in March of 1980. He has a degree in English from Wesleyan University and received a graduate degree in education administration from Teachers College at Columbia University. He has been co-director of the Countee Cullen Community Center at the Rheedlen Foundation (which became the Harlem Children’s Zone), where he founded Harlem Overheard, a teen-written community newspaper. He is the director of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement at the Open Society Institute.

Erin Dozier
Erin, ’88, received a Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College and later earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. She has practiced communications law for private firms and for the Federal Communications Commission. She is currently Associate General Counsel, Legal & Regulatory Affairs, for the National Association of Broadcasters.

Kathy Ebel
Kathy, ’85, was born in Manhattan and lived in Israel, England, and the New Jersey suburbs before arriving in Brooklyn as a teenager. She is a graduate of Barnard College, where she studied English literature and creative writing. Her poetry, short fiction, and essays have been published in many places. Kathy’s television credits include the daytime drama Another World, for which she received Daytime Emmy and Writers Guild Award nominations, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Cold Case. Julie, ’94, is a fine art photographer with a focus on street photography of Russian people in Brighton Beach and Coney Island in New York City and in St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia. Michael, ’87, was born with pencil in hand in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. His passion for drawing came at a very early age, being influenced by Alex Toth through his imaginative characters in Hanna Barbera cartoons as well as the Superfriends. Katie Flynn-Jambeck
Katie, ’90, is the Washington, DC-based student organizing manager for Greenpeace, where she has worked for many years. She directs a program to help college students pressure congressional candidates to address global warming and several other activist projects. She has a degree from Hampshire College in environmental public policy.

Glenda Francis
Glenda, ’88, is an elementary school teacher for the New York City Board of Education. Prior to that she was the Director of Outreach for the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, the successful movement to revamp a funding formula that denied New York City schools a fair share of state tax revenue. She is a graduate of Hunter College and has a graduate degree from New York University in reading education.

He is a law professor at Columbia University Law School.

Georgetta, ’84, graduated from the School of Visual Arts and Fordham University. She teaches art at Seattle Central Community College in Washington. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
